FIFTY+TWO: ROLL 28

MAY14-MAY20
Canon: AE-1
FILM: Lomography 800

Well, 3 weeks or so in a row. Yay!

I’ve come to a decision. The Fifty+Two project will continue, but instead of having one roll of film turned in from the previous week, I will just make sure to have a roll of film done each week. This will relieve a little bit of the pressure I had to keep to one roll of film, and should allow me a bit more experiment room.

That being said, this week’s film was fun. A bit of variety, and a lot of focus problems. Some of that is from a lack of communication between camera and flash while some was also from a weird delay that’s been occurring with the AE-1. Randomly, it won’t take a picture when the shutter button is pressed, but will wait a couple seconds, then fire. Usually the click happens right as I’m giving up holding the camera.

Despite the focal/shutter issues, though, I really enjoyed this set.

The Hollywood Forever Cemetery screens movies during the summer months. A little morbid, maybe… But it’s super fun. A group of us piled into a car and arrived on the lawn around 5pm. I had been jonesing for a chance to go back to 800 ISO for a while, and this was just the chance to go by the lomography store to pick some up.

Unlike the FUJI 800 I used for my first roles, this film came out clear and crisp. I kind of miss the 90s look that the Fuji gave, but the way that colors popped with this film was amazing. I got some really fun lens flares from the sunlight (not to mention a crisp farmer’s tan). I also learned a lot about using a flash with the automatic aperature setting on the camera. Check out these two pictures for example: with flash // without.

Interesting…

FIFTY+TWO: ROLL 26

APR29 - MAY05
Canon: AE-1 Program
FILM: 400 B&W

I think it took me a long time to use this film because I was worried. I didn’t want to waste it. I wanted something special to come from it. Classic me- I tend to put the best things on hold. I’ve been learning more and more, though, that I should take advantage of great things instead of worrying myself. You know, have fun.

This film was great. It was black and white 400 ISO, but it is so much different than the Kodak that I’ve used in the past. Most noticeably the ends are much closer. Lights are white, and darks are black. This doesn’t leave much room to play with contrast with the aperture, but I like that the film has it’s own personality.

Check out the flickr for more pics. Sadly this film was only 24 exp, so there’s not a ton of variety.

EDIT (5/15): On second look, all of these pics also look incredibly flat. The lack of depth is certainly prominent, and I’m surprised I didn’t notice it before. I wonder if this is from the flash or from the film…

FILM: Fuji Superia X-Tra 800

Nathan and Mojen and Jay came over for movie night. Jay brought wine, Nathan and Mojen brought the seed of adventure. “Want to go to Joshua Tree for sunrise?” they asked. I looked at TL, “Yes…….?” She nodded. At 3am, we left Los Angeles.

This was a fun chance to play with light: both lack of and abundance of, as I worked with the sun coming over the hill. I have several shots you can see on my flickr where I was trying to work with slower shutter speeds to really grab the early morning glow and failed. I love the 800 speed film, though. It really is fun. I think I’m going to go buy some more right now…
